The ongoing changes in international trade, the introduction of information technologies, and the increasing demands of customers in regards to the terms and conditions of cargo delivery create prerequisites for the capabilities of the Russian transport system and the participation of JSC Russian Railways in international logistics projects. This was stated by First Vice President of JSC Russian Railways Alexander Misharin on June 7 at the 1520 Strategic Partnership international railway business forum during the discussion on “Transit 1520: Challenges of International Logistics.”
According to him, Russian Railways flexibly reacts to global challenges, offering a transport product that meets all the needs of the modern customer.
Mr. Misharin noted the increase in the transport of transit containers. In 2010, transit transportations through the network of JSC Russian Railways amounted to 30 000 containers, in 2016 there were over 150 000, and by 2020 more than 1 million are expected.
In the first quarter of 2017, the volume of transit-container transportation grew more than 2.5 times when compared to the same period last year.
According to Mr. Misharin, in recent years electronic commerce between the countries of Asia and Europe has been growing at a fast pace. In 2016, its volume was about $2 trillion. According to the forecasted estimates, by 2020 this number will exceed $4 trillion. China’s One Belt, One Road initiative also significantly impacts the growth of transportation. Thus, the prerequisites for switching some of this traffic from sea and air transport to railways.
