Sri Lanka is Planning to Colombo-Matara in Next Year
Sri Lanka is planning to complete its $167.4m south coastal railway line from the city of Colombo to Matara by 2012.
The project has been funded by the Indian Government and being implemented by Indian Railway Construction Company.
The project will upgrade the existing tracks to high-speed tracks to allow trains to run at a speed of 100km/h, reducing the journey time from Colombo to Matara to two hours – a time saving of an hour.
The first phase of the project involved the modernisation of tracks between Galle-Matara, which was completed in March this year, while the entire project is expected to be completed in May 2012.
