KiwiRail to Improve Freight Transportation Performance with TTG Energymiser

KiwiRail, New Zealand’s national rail operator , has signed an agreement with TTG Transportation Technology to use its Energymiser connected driver advisory system (C-DAS) to reduce energy consumption and environmental emissions, as well as improve the punctuality of trains.

Following a successful trial and tendering process, Energymiser will now be launched across KiwiRail’s freight trains by retrofitting 182 mainline diesel and electric locomotives.
TTG’s Energymiser C-DAS offers real-time advice to train drivers to identify precise points where to coast, power and brake to conserve energy, as well as help in ensuring on-time running and automatically adapting to actual conditions throughout each train trip.
TTG business development manager Stan Ghys said: “Energymiser has achieved 14% to over 20% energy savings for high-speed passenger and coal trains in the UK, where the solution is the market leader on a congested rail network, and from 8.9% savings for iron ore trains in Africa, being over 2km-long and 20,000t, to 10% or more for freight trains in Australia, the UK and India.”
The system is also designed to enhance the punctuality of trains and the use of rail capacity by interfacing with current train scheduling systems.
KiwiRail Freight general manager Iain Hill said that the company will implement a range of energy-saving measures across the business to provide value to customers and the environment.
“C-DAS technology will help us reduce the carbon footprint of our customers’ products and long distance passenger journeys, and manage on-time running,” Hill said.
