The first of 60 monorail cars has been delivered to the Indian city of Mumbai for its under-construction $549m (RM1.85bn) monorail project.

The car has been manufactured by Malaysian firm Scomi Group and consortium partner Larsen & Toubro under the $53.6m (Rs24.6bn) turnkey contract for 15 four-car trains. The car will now undergo preliminary systems interface testing, which is critical in ensuring that the monorail system runs smoothly, according to Scomi.

Of the total 19.5km straddle monorail, the first 11km section between Jacob Circle and Wadala is expected to open in mid-2011.
