Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia has opened the first extension to its Ampang Line light metro , which was opened in 1996. The 5.5km line is the first phase of the 18.6km project to Putra Heights, expected to add 30,000 passengers to the present total.

4 new stations have been provided at Awan Besar, Muhibbah, Alam Sutera and Bandar Kinrara 5, where there is a park-and-ride facility. In April 2012, 20 new 750V DC six-car trains were ordered from CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive.

A subsequent order was placed in October 2014 for 30 vehicles to replace the line’s existing 1996 fleet. Each trainset carries 1,308 passengers. Nine are being manufactured at CRRC’s Malaysian factory in Batu Gajah, Perak.
