The Canadian government is investing C$700 million over five years in funding for Via Rail’s refurbishment of passenger train services and improvements to reduce carbon emissions.

Ottowa’s Federal Government is to give almost C$700m to boost funding for Canada’s Via Rail, over the next five years.

Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon announced the C$691.9m initiative to help Via Rail refurbish passenger train services at Union Station in downtown Toronto, according to Canadian news site ctv.ca.
Via Rail serves 4.1 million passengers over 14,000km of track each year, providing services for 450 Canadian cities.
The money will be invested to reduce emissions by improving fuel efficiency which will cut travel times, Cannon says.
