Sudan will Open North-South Railway Line

Sudan has inaugurated a railway line linking the country’s north and south, following the end of the civil war that kept the country divided for decades.

The 446km railway, originally built in the 1960s, re-links the town of Babanusa in central Sudan to Wau in the country’s south, according to Reuters.

It is expected to boost the economy by lowering commercial transportation costs of bringing goods from Port Sudan. The $46m project has been financed by the Sudanese Government (two thirds of the cost) and international donors.

The railway will begin with commercial services once a ticketing system is in place. The country has also invited bids to conduct a feasibility study for extending the railway from Wau through three other southern towns including Juba and then to northern Uganda.
