Siemens to Supply New Trains for GTR

Siemens has been chosen to supply for a new fleet of trains for GTR’s Great Northern services. The 25 six-car trains will be a type of the Class 700 units which being supplied for Thameslink. In the new year, order will complete and the new trains will enter passenger service by the end of 2018. Trains will use between Welwyn and Hertford, Stevenage and Letchworth.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) plans to run a financial competition to find the £200 million for the new trains. GTR fleet director Gerry McFadden said: [quote font_size=”20″]

“Coupled with the seven-day-a-week service to Moorgate that we started this month, these new trains will give our passengers a superior, modern comfortable journey with more capacity, improved reliability, air conditioning and passenger information systems that can be remotely updated to provide real-time information.

“This is just one of four new train fleets we’re bringing in, introducing almost 1,400 new train carriages to the network, and we’re delighted to be appointing Siemens as our preferred bidder.”
