CJSC Transmashholding and JSC Russian Railways have concluded a contract for supply of innovative mainline AC freight electric locomotive 2ES5.

The contract was signed by Vladimir Yakunin, the President of JSC Russian Railways, and Andrey Bokarev, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of CJSC Transmashholding in the framework of the forum “Strategic Partnership 1520” in Sochi. In accordance with the contract, Russian Railways will receive 200 electric locomotives 2ES5 during the period from 2013 to 2020.

The works on development of this electric locomotive are executed in the framework of the Memorandum, signed by CJSC Transmashholding, French company Alstom Transport and JSC Russian railways on the 21st of September, 2010, at the Innotrans exhibition in Berlin.

2ES5 electric locomotive is developed in the Novocherkassk subsidiary of the joint Transmashholding and Alstom Transport engineering center – TRTrans company. This is the second locomotive of the 5th generation, developed in the framework of Russian-French partnership. (after 2-system passenger locomotive EP20).

2ES5 design uses the most up-to-date technical solutions, including traction drive with asynchronous traction motors with individual voltage inverters, oil-free piston-type compressors with air cleaning and drying units, diagnostic and control microprocessor system. The contract provides that the electric locomotive components, developed in France, should be localized in Russia and their production will be established at the domestic enterprises.

Large usage of the new locomotives will allow to increase significantly traffic-carrying capacity of the Russian railways, as well as to increase energy efficiency and reduce carrier cost. Electric locomotive design includes runs between repairs, which are multiply increased in comparison with the serial models. Due to that fact maintenance costs will be reduced.

A lot of attention in the design of the electric locomotive is paid to the working conditions of a locomotive crew. The design ensures the use of modular driver’s cab with climate control, which is in compliance with all modern sanitary, ergonomic and safety standards as well as energy absorbing units, ensuring the safety of drivers during mutual collision.

The electric locomotives will be produced at the Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant.
