Introduction

ProRail has initiated ATO train testing on the Betuweroute, commencing a one-year test phase at the Kijfhoek marshalling yard. The project aims to assess the potential of autonomous operation in freight transport.

Project Commencement

The Dutch rail infrastructure manager, ProRail, has started ATO (Automatic Train Operation) train testing on the Betuweroute. This marks the beginning of a one-year test phase at the Kijfhoek marshalling yard.

Operational Details

During the test phase, DB Cargo will operate a locomotive specifically prepared for ATO, pulling several wagons. Some of these wagons will be weighted, but none will carry commercial cargo. The tests will integrate both GoA2 (semi-autonomous operation with a driver onboard) and GoA4 (fully autonomous operation with remote supervision) for freight transport. New technologies, including Remote Supervision & Control, are being implemented, and a test team will be present in the cab.

Expected Benefits

The implementation of semi- or fully autonomous operation is anticipated to yield several benefits. Full GoA4 deployment could potentially increase capacity on specific corridors by up to 20–30%. Energy consumption may be reduced by 10–15%, dependent on the route and load. Operational costs are projected to decrease by up to 20% due to smoother driving behavior and fewer unplanned stoppages.

Strategic Context

The test phase is taking place on the Betuweroute, a dedicated freight corridor equipped with the ERTMS signalling system. This route, a critical artery for freight traffic from Germany to the Netherlands, offers a controlled environment for extensive ATO testing.

Conclusion

Following the test phase, a detailed evaluation will be conducted. The results will contribute to the standardization and certification of ATO technology, with the objective of broader implementation across Europe, including along the Rhine-Alpine Corridor. The ATO train testing program is a collaboration between the Dutch and German Ministries of Infrastructure.
