Port Of Los Angeles Expands With 200-Acre Pier 500 Terminal
Port of Los Angeles initiated a 200-acre Pier 500 terminal on Terminal Island, including 3,000 feet of wharf, with a 2025 RFP.

The Port of Los Angeles initiated a pre-development phase for a new container terminal with the issuance of a Request for Proposals in October 2025. The project, designated Pier 500, is planned for a site on Terminal Island.
Technical specifications for the Pier 500 development outline a 200-acre facility located south of the existing Pier 400 terminal. The design includes the construction of two new berths and approximately 3,000 linear feet of wharf to accommodate next-generation container vessels.
This infrastructure expansion follows a year in which the port processed 10.2 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units. The 2025 total represented a 1% decrease in volume compared to 2024 figures. The port has utilized digital logistics tools, including Wabtec’s Port Optimizer, for cargo tracking over the past decade.
In 2025, the Port of Los Angeles maintained its status as the busiest container port in the United States for the 26th consecutive year. The total value of trade handled by the port in 2024 was recorded at $333 billion.
