Knorr-Bremse, VTG Rail UK: FreightControl Sentinel Boosts UK Rail Freight

Introduction

Knorr-Bremse will supply FreightControl Sentinel technology to VTG Rail UK, providing a minimum of 2,000 wagon sets through the end of 2029. The agreement, valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range, aims to enhance the digitalization of rail freight transport in the UK.

Contract Details

Knorr-Bremse has finalized an agreement with VTG Rail UK to supply FreightControl Sentinel systems for freight rail operations. The contract, extending until the end of 2029, requires Knorr-Bremse to deliver and integrate the technology into VTG Rail UK’s vehicles. Furthermore, the agreement includes collaboration on future system generations and digital dashboards. The financial value of the order is in the mid double-digit million-euro range.

FreightControl Sentinel Technology

The FreightControl Sentinel system is utilized in VTG’s iWagon platform, a pilot project incorporating mechatronic components, sensors, and data analysis tools. This technology utilizes axle generators and wheel slide protection developed by Knorr-Bremse to monitor wheels and brake conditions in real time. This system aims to reduce wheel defects, lower maintenance needs, and improve operational safety.

Integration and Applications

FreightControl Sentinel operates independently within Knorr-Bremse’s Digital Freight Train technology program, which also includes the FreightLink digital automatic coupler and the FreightControl automation system. These technologies support train functions such as automatic coupling, remote uncoupling, and automatic brake testing.

Market Expansion and Customer Adoption

VTG Rail UK has already received orders for iWagons equipped with FreightControl Sentinel from customers including Heidelberg Materials, Breedon Group, Tarmac, and Alvance British Aluminium. Knorr-Bremse plans to expand the availability of FreightControl Sentinel throughout European markets following its introduction in the UK. In September 2025, Knorr-Bremse agreed to acquire Duagon Group for about €500m ($586m) to expand its business in electronic and software solutions for rail vehicles.
