China-based information and communications technology (ICT) company Huawei has secured a contract from Malaysia’s national infrastructure firm Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) to provide a railway communication system for the extension of Kuala Lumpur’s Ampang Line Light Rail Transit (Ampang LRT).

Under the deal, Huawei has been working with contractor George Kent Malaysia (GKM) to help Prasarana deploy the communication system on the 18km Ampang LRT extension.
George Kent is responsible for trackwork and railway systems on the Ampang Line extension, which covers 13 stations and ten traction power substations from Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur to Putra Heights, Selangor.
Huawei has designed and developed the telecommunication system to meet Prasarana’s requirements to enhance safety and efficiency on the Ampang extension.
Installation of the communication system on the line is scheduled to be carried out in the coming months.
The system includes SDH Backbone, IP PABX telephony, CCTV video surveillance, public address, passenger information displays, voice recording, NTP clock services and other railway communication devices.
Huawei Enterprise Business country director for Malaysia Representative Office Leo Li said: “We are committed to ensuring the timely and efficient delivery of the project, helping Prasarana build a state-of-the-art public transportation system and further improve the quality of life for the Malaysian people.”
Thales secured a contract from GKM in September 2012 to provide its SelTrac communications-based train control (CBTC) system for the existing 27km Ampang light LRT line and for the 18km southwest extension.
Thales’s contract is part of the Ampang LRT Extension Project (Ampang LEP), which is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
