Introduction

BYRÓ architekti, with architects Tomáš Hanus and Jan Holub, has won the architectural competition for the new Chomutov multimodal terminal. The terminal will be constructed in Chomutov, within the Ústí nad Labem Region, near the German border.

Project Overview

The design, selected from seven entries, will see a contract for design work signed with BYRÓ architekti. Boele studio secured second place, and Papundekl architekti + Landa Ruhmkorf came in third.

Project Objectives

The competition aimed to find a design meeting both architectural and transport needs for the new interchange terminal. According to Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic, the terminal is part of a railway line reconstruction aimed at increasing capacity and speed, thus reducing travel times. The winning design was praised for its architectural quality, elegant lines, and use of restrained materials. The jury also noted the layout of public spaces and transport links, specifically the connection to Lipská Street.

Terminal Features

The Chomutov multimodal terminal will integrate rail services with urban, regional, and long-distance buses, and will also include a large park-and-ride facility. The selected team will also develop a conceptual design for a city park with a playground and sports facilities and will create a possible layout for future urban blocks, which will serve as a basis for the city’s urban study and negotiations with landowners and developers.

Strategic Context

The investment project includes relocating the station building closer to the city center, enhancing access to trains. Chomutov station is a crucial railway junction. Správa železnic is also involved in other projects along the Podkrušnohorská Main Line, a significant railway route in the Czech Republic. The Cheb – Karlovy Vary – Chomutov – Most – Ústí nad Labem route runs through the north-west of Bohemia, near the German border.

Collaboration and Development

The City of Chomutov’s initiative to explore relocating the bus station facilitated collaboration with Správa železnic, leading to a joint architectural competition for a multimodal rail and bus transport terminal. Technical aspects were coordinated with the Ústí nad Labem Region.
