Project Overview

The fully electric locomotive was retrofitted from a traditional diesel unit. It is designed for closed-loop switching operations, which will eliminate emissions, reduce noise, and cut energy costs. The project aligns with Canada’s net-zero climate goals.

Funding and Costs

The Alberta government, through its Emissions Reduction Alberta program, provided C$2 million for the project. The total cost of the Li-Ion 2025 project was C$4 million.

Testing and Deployment

The locomotive underwent phase one of field testing earlier this year. Testing will continue at the Southlands Terminal. Commercial use is planned for early 2026.
