A consortium comprising Metropolitan Area Transport, Helsinki City Transport, and Länsimetro has awarded a contract valued in excess of €60 million to Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF). The agreement covers the supply and installation of a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system for the Helsinki metro network.

The project scope includes the replacement of the existing signaling infrastructure across the 43-kilometre, 30-station network. CAF will also deliver a new control center as part of the modernization. The system is scheduled to achieve full commercial operation by the end of 2029.

As part of the contract, CAF will retrofit the existing M300 rolling stock with its on-board CBTC equipment. This work is a component of the overall upgrade for the network, which serves more than 78 million passengers annually.

This award follows a previous contract under which CAF supplied 25 metro units to Helsinki. The company has also executed rolling stock projects for transport authorities in other Nordic cities, including Oslo, Stockholm, and Lund, and secured a contract for automatic metro operation in Naples, Italy.
