CAF Secures ~€49M Euskotren Contract for 9 Trams

A contract valued at nearly EUR 49 million has been signed between manufacturer CAF and public transport operator Euskotren for the supply of nine extra-long trams. The new rolling stock is designated for the tram network in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country in Spain. The procurement directly supports the operational needs of the network’s planned extension to the Zabalgana district.

The vehicles will have a length of 44 meters and be constructed with seven modules, providing a maximum capacity of 400 passengers. These dimensions are consistent with the extra-long trams already in service on the Vitoria-Gasteiz network, ensuring fleet compatibility. While external verification data confirms the agreement between CAF and Euskotren, it did not provide the specific technical, cost, or delivery details outlined in the primary announcement.

The total contract value encompasses more than the vehicle hardware. A separate allocation of nearly EUR 4 million is designated for a comprehensive package of spare parts and replacement components essential for long-term maintenance. Additionally, the agreement includes the delivery of a driving simulator, valued at EUR 1.19 million, for driver training programs.

Deliveries of the nine units are scheduled to occur between 2028 and 2029. The new trams will feature several technical upgrades focused on passenger systems. A modernized air conditioning system is specified, designed to perform effectively during periods of high ambient temperatures.

A significant portion of the design update is focused on universal accessibility standards, exceeding current legal requirements for the 100% low-floor vehicles. The new units will introduce signage adapted to updated universal accessibility criteria. Interior layouts will be modified by removing folding seats to create more fluid passenger circulation spaces. Priority seating will be designated with color differentiation for improved visual identification by passengers with mobility needs. Euskotren states these modifications are intended to provide equal access for all passenger categories.

This fleet acquisition provides Euskotren with the required capacity to service its expanded network infrastructure. The contract’s inclusion of a simulator and a substantial spare parts package points to a long-term operational and maintenance strategy for the new vehicles.
