MBTA Deploys $2.5M New Haven Locomotive, US
MBTA deployed its $2.5 million refurbished New Haven locomotive into US commuter service, the second of three heritage tribute units.

MBTA Deploys Refurbished New Haven Locomotive
This month, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the United States entered a refurbished heritage locomotive into commuter-rail service following a restoration project costing approximately $2.5 million. The diesel-electric unit, capable of 100 mph, is the second of three planned tribute locomotives. The program targets the modernization of select units from an original fleet of 37 locomotives that first operated between 1987 and 1991.
Project Scope and Technical Specifications
The recently deployed unit pays tribute to the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (New Haven), one of three legacy railroads whose operations and infrastructure formed the basis of the current MBTA network. The locomotive was fully rebuilt and refurbished to meet modern operational and safety standards. Following the overhaul, it was repainted in the New Haven’s historic orange, white, and black livery.
The locomotive is now in active service on commuter-rail lines operating from Boston’s South Station. These routes largely correspond to the former territory of the New Haven Railroad, which constituted the bulk of the MBTA’s southside network. The MBTA acquired the railroad’s infrastructure and associated rolling stock in 1973.
This project represents a capital-efficient approach to fleet management, extending the operational life of a legacy asset for approximately $2.5 million, a fraction of the cost of procuring a new locomotive. The initiative combines state-of-good-repair investment with a public engagement strategy celebrating regional railway history.

Fleet Modernization and Heritage Program
The New Haven locomotive is the second unit completed under a program designed to honor the three primary predecessor railroads of the MBTA. The first locomotive, featuring a Boston and Maine Railroad (B&M) heritage livery, was entered into service in September 2025. The program utilizes some of the last remaining locomotives from an original procurement of 37 units from the late 1980s.
Refurbishment programs for older rolling stock are common among North American transit agencies facing capacity constraints and aging fleets. These projects allow authorities to maintain service levels and fleet availability while managing capital expenditure. By linking the overhauls to a heritage theme, the MBTA can also strengthen public and community relations.
Next Steps
The third and final locomotive in the current heritage series, a unit honoring the New York Central Railroad, is scheduled to be completed and enter service in the coming weeks. No further heritage units have been announced as part of this specific program.
