Introduction

On September 19, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that Amtrak and Union Station Redevelopment Corp. (USRC) boards unanimously approved the terms of a renegotiated cooperative agreement. This agreement restores “strong federal control” of Washington Union Station.

Agreement Details

The new agreement involves USRC, Amtrak, and the Federal Railroad Administration. According to Secretary Duffy, this will expedite the station’s restoration process, improve security measures, and stimulate new economic development.

Background

In August, Secretary Duffy revealed that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) would assume management control of Washington Union Station from Amtrak. While the USDOT has maintained ownership of the station, Amtrak has been responsible for its operations through a lease agreement.

Goals of the New Agreement

USDOT states that the new agreement will facilitate the management of state-of-good repair projects. It also aims to increase revenue streams through retail, office, and event space, improve security, and enhance multimodal transportation. Additionally, it is intended to attract private investment and create a family-friendly environment.
