The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has awarded Alstom a contract valued at CAD 2.3 billion for the supply of 70 new six-car subway trains. The procurement is designated for fleet replacement on Line 2 and to provide rolling stock for planned network expansions.

Of the initial order for 420 cars, 55 trainsets are allocated to replace existing vehicles on Line 2. The remaining 15 trainsets will service the future Line 1 Yonge North and Line 2 Scarborough extensions. The agreement includes an options clause for the purchase of up to 150 additional trainsets.

Contractual obligations mandate local production, specifying the use of Canadian carbon steel and aluminium. The project is projected to create 945 direct and over 1,700 indirect jobs within Canada.

The vehicle design features an open gangway configuration and is equipped for both manual and driverless operation. Technical specifications include an active levelling system, integrated cybersecurity for train control systems, and designated multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs and bicycles.
