Alstom has secured a contract from Thailand-based general contractors and basic infrastructure designer CH. Karnchang Public Company to extend the Bangkok Metro’s existing Green Line by 12.6km.

Under the €14m deal, Alstom will design and build the trackwork and a third-rail electrification system for the extension project.
Construction of the Green Line extension from Bearing to Samutpakran is scheduled to start by the end of 2014 and is expected to be finished in 2017.
The company will also be responsible for building a 48-acre depot to maintain the fleet of 40 three-car trains, which will operate on the new extended line.
The extension will add nine stations to the line and will carry around 57,000 passengers per day.
The green line extension project is part of the programme led by the Thai government, which has already committed €52.7bn to improve transport infrastructure and ease congestion on the country’s main road networks. The majority of the proposed investment is directed toward rail projects.
Bangkok Metro’s green line, also known as the Sukhumvit Line, extends from Mo Chit to Bearing in the Bang Na District.
The new extended line will provide a safer, cleaner mode of transport for the residents of the city of Bankgok.
Separately, MRTA has also approved construction of the 21.6km Brown Line at an estimated cost of BAHT45bn (€1.05bn).
Developed as a monorail, the line will include 22 stations and run from Kae Rai via Ngam Wong Wan Road and Kaset-Navamin Road to Lam Salee.
MRTA will submit the Brown Line plan to the Transport Ministry in September 2013 for final approval, following which design work is expected to be completed in 2016.
The tender for the construction of the line is expected to be announced in 2017, with work expected to take three years to complete and scheduled to be open in 2021.
