Canadian Pacific Kansas City has placed an order for 65 EMD® SD70ACe-T4 freight locomotives from Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company. The units will be manufactured at the Progress Rail facility in Muncie, Indiana. This procurement is part of a fleet modernization initiative for the Class I railroad’s North American network, which extends across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

The acquisition is a component of a multi-year capital investment program by CPKC valued at over US$800 million. This program allocates capital for new locomotives from two primary U.S. manufacturers, Progress Rail and Wabtec. The strategy establishes a dual-sourcing framework for the railroad’s mainline fleet renewal.

The locomotives are compliant with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emissions standard. Each unit incorporates the Talos™ energy management system, which the EPA has certified as providing a 12.3% efficiency gain. Delivery of the initial 30 locomotives from this order is scheduled for the second half of 2026.
