Quick Definition: ETCS

ETCS (European Train Control System) is the signaling and control component of the ERTMS. It replaces disparate national train control systems with a single standard, allowing trains to cross borders seamlessly while ensuring safety through automatic train protection (ATP).

Before ETCS, a train traveling from France to Germany needed multiple signaling systems on board. ETCS solves this interoperability issue. It continuously calculates a safe maximum speed for each train; if the driver exceeds it, the system intervenes and brakes automatically.
