Introduction

Webuild and its partners in the Metro C Consortium have commenced the second macro phase of works at Venezia Station, a key component of Rome’s metro network expansion, following the completion of the first macro phase in June 2023. This project is part of Line C, a 29 km strategic infrastructure initiative for the Italian capital.

Venezia Station Phase 2 Launch

Construction at Venezia Station entered its second phase on 16 November, focusing on completing the station box and associated structural elements. The Metro C consortium, led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori, is executing the works on behalf of Roma Metropolitane for the City of Rome.

First Macro Phase Achievements

The first macro phase, initiated in June 2023, involved utility relocations and protective measures for nearby heritage sites. Key accomplishments included the installation of 124 diaphragm walls – 91 permanent and 33 cross walls – reaching depths of up to 85 metres with thicknesses of 1.5 metres. An additional 18 walls were constructed to support the fire shaft on Via dei Fori Imperiali. Excavation and replacement involved 35,000 cubic metres of soil and concrete, supported by 4,700 tonnes of steel.

Archaeological and Monitoring Activities

Archaeological operations began in May 2025 under the supervision of the Special Superintendency of Rome, uncovering Roman and medieval structures, including the alignment of the ancient Via Flaminia and remains of insulae. To safeguard historic monuments, over 1,500 monitoring instruments were installed across locations such as Basilica Ulpia, Trajan’s Forum, and Palazzo Bonaparte.

Future Works and Project Overview

The second macro phase will encompass soil consolidation, diaphragm wall completion, utility relocations, and a new archaeological excavation extending 4–5 metres below ground level. Simultaneously, work will advance on a shaft on Via dei Fori Imperiali. Webuild has completed the archeo-stations Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali, scheduled to open in December. The consortium is also progressing on Section T2, a 4-kilometre stretch linking Venezia to Clodio/Mazzini, including four stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (interchanging with Line A), and Clodio/Mazzini. Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro will be designed as archeo-stations.
