New Hub Overview

The Rail Technology Hub, a strategic expansion for the rolling stock engineering specialist, represents a significant investment. Nick Goodhand, Managing Director, DB ESG, stated that the hub reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and will enable better service to customers, collaboration with industry partners, and the development of future rail technologies.

Facilities and Capabilities

The facility includes a Digital Engineering Laboratory, dedicated engineering spaces, and a large workshop. The workshop has mainline access and two roads with inspection pits. These features support DB ESG’s expanding specialist teams and address growing customer demand.

Digital Engineering Focus

DB ESG’s Digital Engineering team, which started exploring 3D scanning and printing in 2018, has produced thousands of components. The new facility will allow the laboratory to expand with additional 3D printers and workspace.

Project Services and Future Technologies

The Project Services team will use the larger workshop for spares holding, modification equipment, turnkey installations, and repairs. The Future Technologies team will develop sustainable solutions, including hydrogen linked with carbon capture devices for internal combustion engines, and advanced data systems for predictive maintenance and operational efficiency. DB ESG will also focus on battery technology, working with Turntide Technologies to build, test, and refine battery boxes for UK rolling stock.

Collaboration and Future Goals

The hub provides space for close collaboration with industry partners to enable joint projects and cross-sector innovation. By consolidating its engineering capability, DB ESG aims to support the rail industry’s transition to a more sustainable, technology-driven future.
