The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) has contracted Siemens Mobility to manufacture seven Charger diesel-electric locomotives. Funding for the procurement is provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The units will be constructed at the Siemens facility in Sacramento, California, in compliance with federal Buy America regulations.

The acquisition facilitates the expansion of Tri-Rail service into MiamiCentral station. The new locomotives will replace a fleet of six EMD GP49 locomotives currently in operation across the 73.5-mile commuter rail network. The SFRTA has scheduled the new fleet to enter service in 2029.

Each Siemens Charger locomotive is compliant with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emissions standards. The technical specifications of the Charger model meet the operational requirements for entry into the downtown Miami passenger rail hub operated by Brightline.
