📉 Market Brief:
  • Event: Trenitalia’s 2025 delivery of 108 regional trains for fleet modernization.
  • Key Data: EUR 7 billion total investment for regional rolling stock renewal.
  • Impact: Modernization of 80% of Italy’s regional fleet, affecting service nationwide.

Trenitalia, a subsidiary of the FS Italiane group, has allocated approximately EUR 1 billion in the last year towards its regional rolling stock modernization program. This investment facilitated the delivery of 108 new regional trains in 2025. Verification data confirms these core figures and the program’s alignment with the parent group’s strategic objectives.

The initiative is a component of the FS group’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan. The plan provides for the delivery of an additional 103 trains in the coming years. Upon completion, the total number of new-generation regional trains in service is projected to reach 1,081 by the year 2027. The total investment value assigned to the renewal of the regional fleet is EUR 7 billion. This capital outlay is intended to modernize approximately 80% of the current fleet.

Distribution of the 108 trains delivered in 2025 was executed on a nationwide basis. Asset allocation is determined by public service contracts established with Italy’s regions and autonomous provinces, which are the commissioning authorities for regional rail transport. The stated purpose of this distribution model is to enhance regional services and mitigate quality differences between various territories.

To date, Trenitalia Regionale’s operational fleet includes 978 modern trains. This total is composed of 643 new-generation units from the current program and 335 units acquired previously. Company projections indicate that upon completion of the full delivery schedule, Italy’s regional fleet will have an average age of less than 10 years, positioning it as the youngest in Europe.

Gianpiero Strisciuglio, general manager and CEO of Trenitalia, stated that the new trains are engineered for higher standards of comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency. The operational scope of Trenitalia’s regional service includes over 6,000 daily trips, transporting an estimated 400 million passengers annually. The service is augmented by approximately 180 intermodal “Link” connections, which integrate rail with bus, ship, or other transport modes to serve areas with limited direct rail access.
