Thales will equip two railway lines in Austria with its European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 solution.

The rail lines include the Vienna-St Pölten (Tullnerfeld) section of the Western railway mainline across 60km and along the 148km-long Brenner Axis, and are expected to enter operation in December 2012.

The ETCS system will allow communication with the train to be carried out through the digital mobile radio GSM-R.
The project is expected to improve speed, safety and efficiency of the rail system, as well as lowering costs.
