BLT Baselland Transport has commenced semi-automated train operations on the 13-kilometer Waldenburg–Liestal line in Switzerland. The Federal Office of Transport (BAV) issued the operating license for the Grade of Automation 2 (GoA2) service, which is the first of its kind on a regional railway in the country. The system functions on a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) platform.

Under GoA2, the train’s acceleration, speed regulation, and precision stopping at stations are automated. The driver remains in the cab to monitor the route, manage door operations, and provide departure authorization. Continuous data exchange between the train and trackside equipment via the CBTC system has replaced all conventional lineside signaling along the route.

The activation of automated service follows an infrastructure modernization program that began in 2022. This project involved the complete renewal of track and stations on the Waldenburg line, alongside the introduction of new rolling stock. The total investment for the program was allocated at several million Swiss francs.

A subsequent phase of automation is planned for the Waldenburg depot. BLT Baselland Transport intends to implement Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) for fully automated shunting and stabling of vehicles, with a target implementation date at the end of 2026.
