The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) have allocated a combined $69.3 million toward freight rail infrastructure. PennDOT’s program accounts for $53 million of the total, with the NCDOT designating $16.3 million for projects within its jurisdiction.
Funding from PennDOT will support 30 separate projects across the state. A subset of this program involves eight projects located in southwestern Pennsylvania. The state’s investment addresses track, bridge, and signal system requirements for regional and short-line rail operators.
Among the grant recipients in Pennsylvania is the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway. The regional railroad will utilize its awarded funds for the rehabilitation of three rail bridges located in Washington County. This specific initiative is one of the eight projects approved for the southwestern region of the state.
