EMR Aurora Trains: UK Rail Modernization & Passenger Experience
Expert:
EMR’s new Aurora trains, part of a £400M investment, begin passenger service this December, modernizing Intercity **rail travel** with enhanced capacity and comfort.

Introduction
East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Transport UK have announced that the first of the new Aurora trains, part of a GBP 400 million fleet, will begin passenger service this December, enhancing Intercity travel across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.
Fleet Overview
Hitachi Rail constructed the 33 new bi-mode Aurora trains, which are designed to modernize travel on the Midland Main Line. These trains will provide increased seating capacity, improved comfort and accessibility, and better digital connectivity.
Key Features and Improvements
Each train will be equipped with updated interiors, including improved air conditioning, power sockets at every seat, complimentary Wi-Fi, and information screens. The bi-mode units are designed to use the GBP 1.5 billion Midland Main Line upgrade, enabling them to run on electric power, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 66% and offer quieter journeys.
Capacity and Design Enhancements
The new fleet will offer 24% more seats and 19% more legroom per five-car train compared to EMR’s existing Meridian sets. The total capacity across the Midland Main Line is expected to increase by 46% once all 33 trains are in service.
Passenger Experience
EMR collaborated with Derby-based DG DESIGN to adapt the FISA Lean seat design, focusing on comfort while retaining practicality. The seats include power and USB outlets, coat hooks, folding tables, and space for cabin-sized luggage. Passengers will also benefit from a new multi-sim Wi-Fi system and specially treated glass to enhance mobile signal strength.
Conclusion
The Aurora fleet is a key component of EMR’s modernization and sustainability plans under Transport UK, supporting a more efficient and environmentally friendly rail service. The introduction of the new trains will align with infrastructure upgrades on the Midland Main Line, aiming to reduce journey times and improve reliability for passengers traveling between London St Pancras, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, and other locations.
