Introduction

Lokaltog, a part of the Danish public transport authority Movia, has shortlisted three manufacturers to submit final bids for new battery-electric trains and charging infrastructure for the Nærum Line. The project aims to replace the current diesel multiple units, which have been in service since 1999.

Shortlisted Suppliers

The following suppliers have been invited to submit final tenders following a prequalification process:

  • Bozankaya Rayli Sistemler A.S. (Turkey) in cooperation with Efacec Engenharia e Sistemas S.A. (Portugal)
  • Končar Inc. (Croatia)
  • Stadler Deutschland GmbH (Germany) in cooperation with Furrer+Frey AG (Switzerland)

Project Scope and Timeline

The tender encompasses the delivery of four battery-electric trainsets and associated charging infrastructure. According to the plan approved by the Capital Region of Denmark, the new trains are anticipated to commence passenger service on the Nærum Line between late 2029 and late 2030. Lokaltog aims to finalize the contract with the selected supplier in autumn 2026. The Nærum Line spans 7.8 kilometers, connecting Jægersborg and Nærum and serving eight stations. Approximately 750,000 passengers utilize the route annually.

Reasons for Replacement

The existing fleet comprises RegioSprinter diesel units manufactured in 1999. The replacement is driven by increasing maintenance expenses and challenges in acquiring spare parts, as these units approach the end of their operational lifespan.

Procurement Process

In September 2024, the Regional Council of the Capital Region decided to initiate a procurement process for new battery trains for the Nærum Line, aligning with Denmark’s broader initiative to promote sustainable and zero-emission regional transport. The tender timeline includes:

  • September 2025: Tender notice published
  • October 2025: Prequalification results announced
  • June 2026: Deadline for final bids
  • September 2026: Evaluation and supplier selection
  • October 2026: Contract signing
  • 2029–2030: Expected delivery and commissioning of new battery trains

Conclusion

Lokaltog has shortlisted three suppliers for the provision of battery-electric trains and charging infrastructure for the Nærum Line, with the contract expected to be finalized in autumn 2026 and the new trains entering service between late 2029 and late 2030.
