Introduction

Oliver Krischer, the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, has officially presented the funding notice from go.Rheinland to DB for the modernisation of Leverkusen-Manfort station. The project will receive EUR 8.7 million in state funding for construction costs and EUR 1 million for planning costs (phases 5 to 9).

Modernisation Funding and Scope

The Government of North Rhine-Westphalia is providing EUR 8.7 million for construction costs and EUR 1 million for planning costs (phases 5 to 9) to support the modernisation of Leverkusen-Manfort station. This funding allows DB to advance to the next planning stages. The planned works are scheduled to coincide with the major overhaul of the Hagen–Cologne line in 2026.

Project Details and Objectives

The modernisation of Leverkusen-Manfort station aims to enhance accessibility and comfort for passengers. The project is part of the existing rail network refurbishment, ensuring all stations within Leverkusen’s city limits will be accessible upon completion. Michael Vogel, Managing Director at go.Rheinland, highlighted the coordination with the line refurbishment to create a future-ready station without additional line closures.

Construction and Planning Phases

DB is undertaking a detailed set of measures at the station, with a focus on full accessibility. The project includes detailed planning for barrier-free conversion. The works are planned as part of the detailed refurbishment of the Hagen – Wuppertal – Cologne route in the first half of 2026. The project team can now begin detailed planning for the barrier-free conversion. Kai Rossmann, DB’s station manager for the Cologne region, emphasized that passengers in Leverkusen will soon benefit from a modern, accessible, and comfortable station.

Strategic Alignment

The modernisation of Leverkusen-Manfort station is part of DB’s S3 infrastructure renewal programme. Deutsche Bahn aims to achieve its goals by 2027, supporting the growth targets of its “Strong Rail” strategy. The programme focuses on upgrading infrastructure, stabilising rail operations, and improving cost efficiency.
