The Widnes Visit

The train, designated 1Z15, entered the Widnes modernization facility onto the arrival/departure line. It parked behind a newly refurbished unit. The visit allowed passengers to observe the facility for almost an hour. The train then departed via Ditton Sidings to Ditton East Junction.

About the Facility

Opened in 2017, Alstom’s Widnes facility is the UK’s largest center for train modernization, spanning 13,000 m². Its design is suitable for work on both intercity and commuter trains.

Recent Projects

Recent projects completed at the site include a GBP 117 million refurbishment program for Avanti West Coast’s Class 390 Pendolino trains and a GBP 25 million renewal of South Western Railway’s Class 458 fleet.
