Introduction

Alstom has secured a contract with PKP Intercity to supply 42 Coradia Max double-deck electric multiple units and 30 years of full-service maintenance, valued at approximately 6.9 billion zloty (1.6 billion euro). The contract, announced on 12 November 2025, includes an option for an additional 30 trains and marks a significant advancement in sustainable passenger transport within Poland.

Contract Details

The agreement between Alstom and PKP Intercity encompasses the delivery of 42 Coradia Max electric multiple units. The contract, worth approximately 6.9 billion zloty (1.6 billion euro), also includes a 30-year full-service maintenance agreement. Additionally, the contract provides an option to purchase 30 more trains.

Production and Manufacturing

The Coradia Max trains will be entirely designed and manufactured in Poland. Production will occur at one of Alstom’s largest factories, a competence center for train manufacturing and engineering. The bogies for the trains will be produced at a facility near Warsaw, which opened in 2022. This facility manufactures bogies for regional and intercity fleets, offering servicing for high-speed bogies up to 250 km/h. This marks the first specialized bogie manufacturing center in Poland.

Train Features and Service

The new Coradia Max trains are designed for speeds up to 200 km/h and will serve cities including Warsaw, Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok, and Terespol. The trains will feature over 550 seats and consist of six cars: four double-deck end cars and two single-deck intermediate cars. Amenities will include air conditioning, Wi-Fi, power sockets, reading lights, luggage areas, bicycle and stroller spaces, quiet zones, family compartments, and a bistro area. Step-free boarding is provided from 760 mm platforms, with lifts for passengers with reduced mobility. The dual-voltage design will allow operation in both Poland and the Czech Republic. The 30-year full-service contract covers preventive, corrective, and overhaul maintenance, along with cleaning services.

Partnership and Investment

This contract builds on Alstom’s existing partnership with PKP Intercity, which began with the delivery of 20 high-speed trains over a decade ago, also supported by 30 years of full-service maintenance. Alstom has been present in Poland since 1997, employing over 4,700 people. The company has invested nearly 600 million złoty (140 million euro) in modernizing production and service facilities over the past decade.
