Alabama Expands Freight Network with $94m Montgomery Intermodal Facility
The Alabama Port Authority, in partnership with Class I freight railroad company CSX, has begun construction on the $94 million Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF).

This state-of-the-art facility, located on a 272-acre site with direct access to Interstate 85 and US Highway 31, is designed to enhance freight mobility and drive economic growth across central Alabama and beyond.
With a capacity of 30,000 shipping containers, the Montgomery ICTF will provide integrated rail and truck connectivity between central Alabama and the Port of Mobile. Since the project’s announcement in 2022, it has already attracted over $3 billion in economic development investments from private companies in the region. CSX will play a critical role in the facility’s operations, offering dedicated rail service and improving connections between the Port of Mobile and inland markets.
John Driscoll, Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “The Montgomery ICTF is a game-changer for freight movement in Alabama and beyond. This facility will provide businesses with seamless access to global markets, driving economic growth and strengthening our state’s supply chain infrastructure.” The facility is expected to be operational by 2027 and will operate five days a week, offering express daily service between the Port of Mobile and Montgomery, a key hub for Alabama’s automotive and manufacturing industries.
The Montgomery ICTF is also expected to reduce congestion on the interstate system, particularly as the Port of Mobile prepares for increased cargo volumes following the deepening of Mobile Harbor. Christina Bottomley, Vice President of Business Development and Real Estate at CSX, highlighted the project’s benefits, saying, “This inland port will transform how freight is moved across the state—shifting more goods from congested highways onto the sustainable, efficient rail network that CSX operates.”
This project represents a significant step forward in Alabama’s efforts to enhance its supply chain connectivity and position itself as a key player in global trade. By integrating rail and truck transportation, the Montgomery ICTF will not only improve freight efficiency but also support the state’s economic development goals.
