Adif Invests £13.3M in Spanish High-Speed Line Signalling Maintenance

Adif has awarded a significant contract valued at €13.3 million ($15.4 million) for the detailed maintenance of signalling equipment and systems along the La Robla-Pola de Lena high-speed rail line. This crucial 50km stretch of track serves as a vital gateway to Asturias, facilitated by the ambitious Pajares Bypass. The newly announced four-year contract, set to commence upon the expiration of the current agreement, will encompass both routine preventive servicing and responsive corrective maintenance of the entire signalling infrastructure. This investment is designed to guarantee the uninterrupted operation and effective management of railway traffic and communications along this strategic corridor.

Ensuring Operational Continuity and Reliability

The primary objective of these extensive maintenance works is to uphold the highest standards of reliability and availability for the advanced signalling technology deployed throughout the Pajares Bypass. Adif’s technical teams will deploy specialised resources to address the complex requirements of maintaining these modern systems, ensuring that railway traffic can flow seamlessly and safely. The La Robla-Pola de Lena route, which officially opened for high-speed passenger and freight services in November 2023, has rapidly become a cornerstone of national rail connectivity. The Pajares Bypass itself is a feat of engineering, featuring 12 tunnels that constitute approximately 80% of its total length, including the monumental 25km Pajares tunnel.

Broader Infrastructure Investment

Adif’s commitment to the La Robla-Pola de Lena line extends beyond signalling, with ongoing management of maintenance contracts for other associated facilities and infrastructure. This holistic approach to infrastructure upkeep reflects Adif’s dedication to long-term operational excellence and passenger safety. In parallel, Adif Alta Velocidad has initiated separate tenders to further enhance its rail network. These include a €7.67 million tender for the supply and installation of seating plates for sleepers on parts of the Northeast high-speed corridor, specifically linked to maintenance bases in Brihuega (Guadalajara) and Calatayud (Zaragoza). The installation work is planned to occur during scheduled night-time maintenance periods to minimise disruption to train services.

Strategic Infrastructure Enhancements

Further underscoring its proactive approach to infrastructure management, Adif Alta Velocidad recently awarded a €6.32 million contract for maintenance and enhancement work on the Benamira and Río Blanco viaducts in Soria province, part of the Guadalajara-Calatayud section. These works are critical for maintaining the structural integrity of these vital elevated sections of the line.
