North Eastern Frontier (NFR) in India will commence work on a rail link connecting Tripura state capital Agartala with Gangasagar in Bangladesh.

The 10km rail track connecting the two countries will cost Rs2.52bn ($55.5m). The Indian Ministry of External Affairs will provide Rs1.46bn ($32.4m) to construct the 5km stretch of the line on the Bangladesh side, while the Department of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in Bangladesh will provide the remaining money to fund the Indian stretch.

India and Bangladesh have agreed to restore railway links in a bid to enhance people-to-people contact and boost bilateral trade and investments.

The rail link project is expected to commence in October 2012.
