Alstom and TMH Signed a Deal to Produce Electric Locomotives

Alstom and Transmashholding have signed a deal to design and produce components for EP20 electric locomotives for Russia, valued at €1bn, featuring current collection and catenary voltage transformation systems for the 1,520mm track gauge zone.

Alstom and Transmashholding (TMH) have signed a deal to design and produce components for EP20 electric locomotives for the Russian market.

The companies will collaborate to develop 200 passenger locomotives for Russian Railways for a contract valued at €1bn ($1.2bn). Tekhnologii Relsovogo Transporta, a joint venture between Alstom and TMH, will develop the locomotives as well as stage metros, regional trains and passenger cars in Novotcherkassk, Russia.

The EP20 is a 7,200kW triple-bogie locomotive with a top speed of up to 200km/h and is designed to operate in temperatures as low as -50°C, according to Alstom.

The locomotives are expected to have current collection and catenary voltage transformation systems to enable their use on both voltage systems of the Russian network.

The EP20 is expected to be the first in a new range of locomotives intended for use in the 1,520mm track gauge zone.
