Hitachi Class 395 Train Wins Rolling Stock Excellence Award

Hitachi Rail Europe’s Class 395 trains have won the Rolling Stock Excellence Award for introducing UK’s first high-speed domestic rail service with a journey time cut to 37 minutes from existing mainline services.

Japanese firm Hitachi’s unit Hitachi Rail Europe has won the Rolling Stock Excellence Award at the Eversholt Rail Group Rail Business Awards 2009 in London, for its Class 395 trains.

Operating at 140mph, the trains marked the introduction of UK’s first high-speed domestic rail service in December 2009.
The trains cut the central London–Kent journey to 37 minutes compared to an average of 80 minutes on existing mainline services.
The new service, delivered six months ahead of schedule, also allows passengers to reach cities like Canterbury and Folkestone from London in an hour.

Now in their 12th year, the Eversholt Rail Group Rail Business Awards recognise excellence in business, technology and engineering.
