Introduction

In 2023, the TRUST centre was launched in Huddersfield, offering interactive safety training for rail workers, with over 10,000 visitors participating to date. The centre, developed in partnership with Active Training Team (ATT), provides a platform for analyzing incidents and experiencing safety-critical scenarios.

Interactive Training Programme

All TRU employees participate in a one-day interactive training program at the TRUST centre. The program focuses on safety protocols relevant to the engineering work undertaken across the 70-mile route.

Active Training Team’s Role

Active Training Team (ATT) partners with the TRUST centre, using actors to realistically portray events that could lead to dangerous railway incidents. Adam Christopher, Active Training Team Director, explained that the actors replicate attitudes and behaviors to make the training relatable and emotionally engaging.

Training Methodology

The training begins with a concrete story designed to make behaviors recognizable and emotionally resonant. This approach is intended to trigger the senses and aid memory retention. Workshops follow the storytelling, equipping participants with the ability to challenge and accept challenges effectively.

Safety Focus

Craig Perry, TRU Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing, emphasized that safety is central to all operations, especially with the engineering work underway across the 70-mile route. The TRUST centre is designed to provide an interactive safety training experience, promoting TRU’s “Safety First” principles.
