SBB’s CHF 2B Double-Deck Train Order: Zurich & Western Switzerland

Introduction

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has awarded a contract worth approximately CHF 2 billion (EUR 2.1 billion) for 116 new double-deck trains. These trains will replace the first-generation fleet, which has been in service for over 30 years, and will operate on the Zurich S-Bahn and in western Switzerland, with deliveries starting in the early 2030s.

New Train Order

Each 150-metre-long train will provide approximately 540 seats and eight multifunctional zones for standing passengers or storage. When operated in double formation (300 metres), the capacity increases, offering 45 additional seats and over 30 percent more standing room compared to the first-generation double-deck push-pull trains (DPZ) of equivalent length.
