Introduction

In February 2024, Siemens Mobility was awarded a contract by Rail Baltica to supply and install the European Train Control System (ETCS) and the European Rail Automatic Train Protection System (ERTMS) for the entire 870 km railway line.

Contract Award

The contract, valued at approximately €600 million, encompasses the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of the signalling systems along the Rail Baltica route. This includes the deployment of ETCS Level 2, as well as the provision of a Control Centre, radio communication systems, and trackside equipment. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2030.

Project Scope

The project scope covers the railway line connecting Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius, with extensions to the Polish border. Siemens Mobility will also be responsible for the maintenance of the signalling systems for a period of seven years following commissioning. The contract also includes options for future extensions.

Technical Details

The ETCS Level 2 system will enable train speeds of up to 250 km/h. The signalling system will be compliant with the latest Baseline 3 release and will ensure interoperability across the European railway network. The project also includes the implementation of a comprehensive cyber security concept to protect the signalling infrastructure.

Operational Aspects

The Rail Baltica project aims to integrate the Baltic States into the European rail network. The new line is designed to improve passenger and freight transport, reducing travel times and increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure. The implementation of ERTMS is a key element in achieving these objectives. Metro Tunnel signalling
