ÖBB Approves €143M For Mattersburg Line Electrification, Modernization.
ÖBB allocates €143 million for Mattersburg line electrification and modernization. Construction starts February 2026, with an 11-month line closure between Wiener Neustadt and Deutschkreutz.

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has allocated approximately €143 million for the electrification and modernization of the Mattersburg line in Burgenland, with overall project completion scheduled for 2027. The primary construction phase is set to commence in February 2026.
A full line closure will be implemented between Wiener Neustadt and Deutschkreutz from February 2026 through December 2026. The 11-month suspension of services will affect regional train operations, including the REX93 and R93 lines, for which bus replacement services will be organized.
The project scope includes the installation of a second track on the section between Wiener Neustadt Hauptbahnhof and Katzelsdorf, as well as on a segment extending from Loipersbach-Schattendorf. Multiple level crossings along the route will be removed and substituted with underpasses.
Infrastructure work will involve adapting the Wiesen-Sigleß and Mattersburger viaducts to support new overhead electrical line equipment. The construction of new technical buildings, such as transformer stations and electronic signaling centers, is also planned.
Five stations on the line will be fully modernized to meet accessibility standards. The station upgrades will incorporate the development of new Park & Ride and Bike & Ride facilities to support intermodal transport.
