Indian Railways Implement ERP Software
New enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is to help Indian Railways integrate its freight, passenger and administrative operations across the country.
The Indian government says the new software will help to plan its salary and pension allocations. The computer system is also expected to enable booking of freight and ticket sales.
The Indian ministry plans to invite bids for the contract in September although the value has not been specified.
ERP software integrates organisational data and processes into one unified system. A typical ERP system will use multiple components of computer software and hardware to achieve the integration.
Indian Railways operates a network of 9,000 passengers and 5,000 freight trains. It transports close to 6 billion passengers and around 700 million tonnes of freight a year and is the largest employer in the country.
