Introduction
GYSEV Zrt.’s new fleet of 11 FLIRT InterCity electric multiple units (EMUs) is set to begin car body production this autumn at Stadler’s Szolnok plant in Hungary, with the first train expected to enter service in the final quarter of 2027.
Contract and Timeline
The contract, signed in March 2024, represents Hungary’s first procurement of new intercity EMUs in three decades. The final units are expected to be introduced by early 2028.
Train Features and Design
The five-car, dual-voltage trains will operate on both Hungarian and Austrian networks, serving routes such as Sopron–Budapest and Szombathely–Budapest. The new trains will feature GYSEV’s green and yellow brand colours alongside a silver base. Interiors will combine grey metal and glass with brown tones and oak wood details. Designed for long-distance travel, the trains will offer first and second-class accommodation, with flexible layouts that allow for more seats in winter and up to 18 bicycle spaces in summer.
Passenger Amenities and Connectivity
Passenger amenities will include air-conditioned, low-floor compartments, modern passenger information systems, additional luggage racks and a bistro area with vending machines. Connectivity will be ensured through Wi-Fi, charging sockets, USB-C ports at every seat, and phone holders to support those working while travelling.
Production and Market Presence
Production of 55 car bodies will take place in Szolnok. Stadler Trains Hungary’s chairman, Dr Róbert Homolya, stated that the handover of trains will mean there are 200 Stadler-built vehicles in Hungary. Stadler’s FLIRT has sold more than 2,750 units across 21 countries since 2002. GYSEV already operates 20 FLIRTs in Hungary, while MÁV has 123 in service. The Szolnok factory has contributed to nearly 1,000 FLIRT units worldwide, representing close to 3,900 car bodies.
Conclusion
The new InterCity trains, optimized for longer journeys, are designed in collaboration by GYSEV, Stadler, and the Innova Design Team. Car body production for the 11 FLIRT EMUs will commence in Szolnok this autumn, with the first units entering service by late 2027.
