DLR Trains Revolutionize London Rail: Capacity & Future Growth

The first of 54 new Docklands Light Railway (DLR) trains has entered service, initiating a major transformation of the London transport network. Manufactured by CAF under a EUR 400 million contract, the new trains are designed to enhance capacity, reliability, and passenger comfort.

New Train Deployment

The rollout of the new DLR trains, manufactured by CAF, represents a significant upgrade. The contract, initially valued at EUR 400 million and signed in 2019, was later expanded to include 11 additional units. The new trains are replacing the oldest trains in the fleet.

Enhanced Features and Capacity

Each new train offers 10 per cent more capacity than the existing fleet. They feature walk-through carriages, air-conditioning, live travel information displays, mobile charging points, and multi-use spaces for pushchairs, bicycles, and luggage. Accessibility has been improved, with three dedicated wheelchair spaces per train. The full replacement of the existing fleet is expected by the end of 2026.

Funding and Support

The project has received over GBP 760 million in combined funding. This includes £260 million from the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund and £500 million through a loan from the National Wealth Fund. London City Airport contributed over £5 million towards the upgrade.

Impact and Future Plans

Once all 54 new trains are operational, the overall capacity across the DLR will rise by more than 50 per cent. The DLR serves six Opportunity Areas, with approximately 45,000 homes either under construction or with planning permission near DLR stations. Transport for London is planning future expansion, including a proposed extension from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead.
