Canadian National Railway has placed an order for 70 high-horsepower locomotives with US companies GE Transportation and Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD).
The order is part of the company’s multi-year locomotive renewal programme to improve fuel efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
GE will supply 35 ES44DC locomotives featuring a 4,400 horsepower engine, with delivery beginning in the fourth quarter of 2010.
EMD will provide 35 ES44DC locomotives featuring a 4,350 horsepower engine, with delivery starting from January 2011.
The new locomotives are 15–20% more fuel efficient than the existing fleet and also feature a distributed power capability to enable remote control of the locomotive.
