The Saudi Railways Organisation has awarded projects worth $2.4bn to construction firms Saudi Binladin Group and Saudi Oger for the 450km Haramain high-speed rail project, under construction in Saudi Arabia.

Under the deals, Saudi Binladin will design and build a passenger station in Makkah, the largest station of the project, and a passenger station in Madinah.

Saudi Oger will construct a passenger station in Jeddah and another in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Rabigh. The Haramain high-speed rail project is a $7bn project financed by the Saudi Government’s public investment fund.

Upon completion, the line will link the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah to KAEC and King Abdulaziz International Airport, while reducing congestion on the roads between Makkah and Madinah, especially during the Hajj.
