Alstom has won a €665 contract from Poland-based long-distance rail operator PKP Intercity to supply 20 high-speed trains, conduct maintenance for 17 years and construct a new maintenance depot.

The trainsets will have 7 cars each, based on Alstom’s new Pendolino platform, and will operate on the Warsaw-Gdansk-Gdynia, Warsaw-Krakow and Warsaw-Katowice routes.

The trainsets will travel between Warsaw and Gdansk in 2.5 hours, and between Warsaw and Krakow or Warsaw and Katowice in slightly more than 2 hours, shortening the travel time considerably.

The trains will run at a speed of 250km/h and carry up to 402 passengers. The trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s Savigliano site in Italy, where it manufactures Pendolino trains. The first trains are scheduled for delivery in 2014.
